Our Story
In The Summer of 2013
Inspired by an interaction with a talented teen in crisis, e.E. Charlton-Trujillo choose to forgo a traditional book tour and set-out on a cross country effort to have candid conversations and hold free creative writing workshops with at-risk youth. To go to the young people Trujillo wrote for, celebrate their strength, honor their struggle, and ask them how can adult better be there for them.
While the experience would become the focus for the award-winning documentary At-Risk Summer, that life changing journey would seed what would become Never Counted Out.

Since 2015, Never Counted Out has given thousands of diverse and inclusive books to traditional and alternative schools, juvenile detention centers, libraries, after school programs and more.
Who We Are
Never Counted Out is a non-profit organization, founded in 2015 by children’s authors e.E. Charlton-Trujillo and Gia Gordon. In traveling America in 2013, e.E. saw how many schools and programs were book poor. Leading with the belief that literacy and access to books are for every child, Never Counted works to bridge that equity gap in underrepresented communities. We believe that the best way to improve literacy is to give young people immediate, full access to a diverse and inclusive books while fostering personal narrative through creative mentoship.
